Celebrating the 100th episode of “Two IPs In A Pod” – a journey of insights, entertainment, and an award

In the world of intellectual property, Two IPs In a Pod has been making waves as a podcast that not only educates but entertains its listeners. As we celebrate our 100th episode, we’re reflecting on how our podcast has evolved and become an important part of the CIPA community.

The podcast is hosted by CIPA’s Chief Executive, Lee Davies, and Honorary Secretary, Gwilym Roberts. Together, they’ve created a space where they engage in insightful conversations with entrepreneurs, patent attorneys, patent office CEOs and Presidents and even the occasional judge, about all aspects of intellectual property.

The podcast was born during the pandemic, its purpose driven by the need to maintain communication with CIPA members. At a time when the world was grappling with unprecedented challenges, Two IPs In a Pod offered members a new way to engage with something relevant to their professional interests during what was an extremely stressful period.

Since then, Two IPs has received more than 38,000 downloads, many thousands more streams and has regular listeners all over the world. The last 10 episodes were listened to in 47 countries, with the US topping our overseas chart.

In October 2021 Two IPs won in the Best Podcast category of the Memcom Awards, the annual awards for the UK’s membership association sector.

The podcast is not only about IP. It’s about connection and community. The show’s initial episodes were titled, “In Isolation with…,” and highlighted the personal stories and struggles of individuals during the pandemic. In one episode, Tim Moss, CEO of the Intellectual Property Office, talked about how his staff responded to the pandemic and adapted to the “new normal.” He discussed the challenges of managing a workforce of 1,250 remotely, the importance of effective communication, and the acceleration of digital service transformation.

The most popular episode, with just under 1,000 downloads, is from July 2020, when Lee and Gwilym were joined by António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office to talk about digital modernisation during the pandemic.

Among the podcast’s highlights are the “Best of Season” episodes which offer a chance to revisit some of the most engaging and informative discussions.

Two IPs In a Pod has been used as a platform to promote significant events and initiatives. For example, it played a pivotal role in launching and promoting projects like The Earthshot Prize. By engaging with these global issues, the podcast showcases how intellectual property professionals are not only experts in their field but also active contributors to broader societal conversations.

On one episode in 2020 we engaged in a social issue that was gripping the entire world. In the wake of the tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, CIPA’s staff joined Lee and Gwilym to share their experiences of racism and discuss their hopes for societal change.

As we celebrate the 100th episode of Two IPs In a Pod, it’s clear that this podcast has become more than just a source of information; it’s a source of inspiration, entertainment, and unity. In this special Pubcast celebrating our 100th episode, Matt Dixon shares his priorities for his year as President, including his determination to put a UK stamp on the Unified Patent Court and to challenge any attempts to erect barriers to qualification as a European Patent Attorney.
