Event Overview

The Unified Patent Court (UPC) is in the provisional application phase. The Court is now expected to come into force later this year or early 2023. CIPA is delighted to be joined by Alexander Ramsay, Chair of the UPC Preparatory Committee, who will provide an update on the current status and progress in preparations for the UPC.

Alexander Ramsay is the Deputy Director at the Division for Intellectual Property and Transport Law, Ministry of Justice, Sweden.

Previously, he was an associate judge at the district court of Stockholm in the division specialized in patent law and then subsequently also an associate judge of appeal in the corresponding division at the Svea Court of Appeal.

He is Chair of the UPC Preparatory Committee and chairs the UPC Administrative Committee, whose role includes appointment of judges and adopting rules and regulations of the Court.

Gwilym Roberts advises clients on all aspects of the patent process including IP audit and capture, IP filing strategies and patent portfolio management techniques. He acts for a range of clients including individuals, SMEs, Universities, and spin outs through to multi-nationals and handles a broad and diverse range of cases before the UK Patent Office, EPO and WIPO.

Leythem Wall is a European and UK patent attorney and litigator specialising in EPO Oppositions and Appeals. Prior to founding Oxon IP, he was a Partner in major European and U.S. IP law firms, and before then in-house patent counsel for ExxonMobil and AkzoNobel.

Leythem is a member of the CIPA Litigation and International Liaison Committees, the EQE Committee (Opposition Paper C), and is President of the European Patent Litigators Association (EPLIT) which promotes European patent attorney representation before the UPC.

He holds the postgraduate certificate in IP Litigation and Advocacy from Nottingham Law School, and the Diploma in Patent Litigation in Europe from CEIPI, University of Strasbourg.

Isobel Barry, Carpmeals

Isobel Barry, Carpmeals

Isobel is a European and UK patent attorney, and partner in Carpmaels and Ransford’s pharmaceutical group. She advises innovator companies through all stages of the pharmaceutical product lifecycle. Much of her time is spent on contentious matters relating to exclusivity-driving patents protecting commercially important products, including patents for small molecules, combination therapies and pharmaceutical formulations. She defends such patents in multiparty opposition and appeal procedures at the European Patent Office, and provides crucial support for pan-European enforcement and the defence of nullity actions.

Isobel is committed to driving diversity and inclusion initiatives, and has been very active in IP Inclusive since its inception.
